Part of the story are the Roper revolving shotguns. These guns , circa 1870 , had a choke that was screwed on to the muzzle . It was many decades before the modern screw in choke came into use. Presumably the screw on choke could be had in different constrictions, although I have never seen a Roper shotgun offered with more than one choke ring.
