After all the US has no proof laws. As long as wall thickness is maintained to a proper safe level then there should be no problem.
It seems every time I sold an English gun one of the very first questions were, "Is it still in proof".

After purchasing a 12 bore damascus hammergun originally proofed at .729 that had been hogged out to .783 during its years in the colonies, is it in proof is always my first question. I am not averse to buying an out of proof gun, but the price I am willing to pay for it is dramatically less than an unaltered in proof gun.
