As usual, Raimey was right . It was a fine nap. Hollis Bentley and Playfair were primarily "makers to the trade" although they made some very fine guns and rifles with their own name. I could not find a photo of the Vindex mark on an actual gun, but I remember owning three guns with that mark. The Vindex mark was Vindex Steel , stamped in a wreath shape on the forend irons. Attached are some exerts from their ca. 1911 catalog showing various offerings , including Vindex Steel and Damascus. Also included are a few shots of their named guns. I have owned three of these, and still shoot one each fall. I do have additional pictures of one of similar grade that was marked in gold,#4. That garniture must have a real story to tell.
