It was one of the model German rifles Newton imported to introduce his 256 Newton caliber. Made by C.G. Haenel also known as the Mannlicher-Haenel New Model and the official designation was the German Infrantry Model 1888. It was listed in the early Newton catalogs as the Model D. The 1914 Newton rifle group is confusing since Newton was trying several ideas to introduce his 256 caliber. There were 3 Grades of rifles and 4 Models. This one with a Marlin made barrel and marked 256. Most of the others, mostly Mausers were rechambered but not all or maybe none marked 256 Newton on the barrel. You might have one in your closet and not know it.
