well piper, agreed...but, lets be more direct here...without slavery, there would have been no war...
slavery represented an economic power, that free labor could not hope to compete against...
plus, slavery anywhere, anytime is an evil, sinful practice...
facts are, the leaders of the south had plenty of time and opportunity to rid themselves of it...they choose not to do so...they/we suffered the consequences...

1; The War was not fought over slavery, Lincoln himself said so, & you know they called him "Honest Abe". So yes the war would have been fought anyway.
