Back in the late 1960's and early 1970's Krieghoff experimented with what they referred to as "free floating barrels" on their over and under double rifles and combination guns. This was possibly a result of their experience in manufacturing their famous Model 32 shotgun, which also has such an arrangement.
In 1970 I bought such a rifle, a Teck boxlock, not really knowing much about it, and took it to Africa on three separate occasions.
The main caliber for the rifle was .458 Winchester Magnum, with conventional barrels. The free floating barrels were on a second set of barrels, in caliber .375 H&H Magnum. Both barrel sets performed satisfactorily and I thought no more about them until recently, when I was given the opportunity to purchase another Krieghoff over and under double rifle, this time a sidelock Ulm Primus model, made in 1969, also with free floating barrels, in caliber 7X65R.

The free floating experiment was also applied to combination guns and drillings. Here is my Ulm Primus 9.3X74R double rifle with an extra barrel set in 16 gauge/7X75 SE vom Hofe, with an insert barrel in 6X52R Brettschneider. It performs satisfactorily in every way.
Since the new rifle is in Germany and I will not have an opportunity to try it out for some time, I wondered if anyone had had any experience with such a barrel arrangement on a Krieghoff rifle in a smaller caliber like this one and could offer any information or advice about it.
