I am surprised guns like the Beattie weren't retrofitted at some point in the past with more contemporary spring loaded pins sort of akin to some of the pinfire to centerfire conversions that happened on a number of guns. Maybe that is an indicator that the somewhat unsightly mechanism worked reasonably well as is.
