Not that you would want to use him, but we have a guy at our club who makes stocks. He cut down a Chestnut tree last summer and started making buttstocks for several Model 12s with it. He just uses a hatchet, knife, file, sandpaper and a few other simple tools. He makes them with the high trap cheekpiece and they come out pretty nice. When he drills the hole, if the bit comes out the side of the stock when he is drilling for the throughbolt, he just throws it away and starts over. That has only happened once or twice. If the stock cracks, he just fills it in a goes on. After several months of practice, he is getting pretty good at it and has turned out some decent stocks. (If you aren't too picky.) And he shoots with them all the time.
