I recently acquired my great great grandfathers hunting gun and wanted to see if the experts can help with identifying some details.

Known facts:
Used while fowl hunting and guiding in the Barneget bay NJ
33” barrel
49” overall length
.875” inside diameter (both barrels)
Top has engraving worn down that appears to start with “REAL” then space some unidentifiable letters then ends in what appears to be “7X7”.
Underside of barrel has Belgium markings including 21.0 and NM

If any one can help with any details it would e much appreciated.

I am not try to get a value but rather fill in some details like what does the top engraving say and confirm the guage.

I know he was a well know guide and hunter who frequently was a hunting companion of Glover Cleveland. Would be cool to have some more details filled in.

Thanks in advance!

Todd

The stamped diameter of the tube looks to be 21.0mm?? The inspector's marks are crowned instead of spangled. Interesting mark beside the encircled >>ELG<< but I cannot make it out for now. Tubeset knitter had the initials of >>NM<<. There is quite a bit of wear on most of the marks including the top rib, which I have no idea for now.

It is a percussion muzzle loader.
21.0 mm would be .827". 8 bore is .835". .875" = 22.2 mm and would be 7 bore.

As Raimey observed, the crowned inspector's marks indicate production 1853-1877

The other proof marks. Le Perron should be somewhere

I suspect the rib mark is "REAL TWIST"
'NM' is not uncommon on Belgian Twist barrels but unfortunately, we haven't been able to ID the maker.
It is possible that the gun maker's initial would be on the inner surface of the locks.

Glover Cleveland was an avid sportsman. This image is likely him with his 8g Colt hammerless double, the only one produced.
