Hi all, just kind of curious how often you wax your stocks and when?

I will put on about three thin coats before the hunting season, then buff with a fine wool cloth. After a day in the field, I'll again buff down the stock with wool.

What methods do you use? Always willing to learn from others, a better mosue trap so to speak.

Thanks all!!

Greg

I use very similar method , but buff with a car buffer- I think Bosch makes a pad/buffer for their 5" ramdom orbital sander that would work even better........

Coats of wax sound OK but why the steel wool? Why not put on the wax and polish it with a soft towel. Surely the directions do not suggest steel wool. Seems like you would take it all off.

Jim, I believe he means wool not steel wool.

I believe the 2nd wool here is referring back to the "Fine Wool Cloth", at least that's how I took it. Will have to wait for Greg's response to know for sure.

Hi all, the wool I'm refering to is the wool off a sheep - not steel wool. Hope this helps.

All the best!!

Never. Wax is foreign to the finishing process. How would I know it's uniformly applied? How would it interfere with a quick retouch with my favorite oil? How would I get it all off before I retouch? How would I know it's all off? .....

If I have a good, impermeable oil finish of the proper sheen on my stock, why would I apply wax? Likewise, if my oil finish is not protecting the wood, why would I apply wax instead of oil?

If my finish gets damaged, it needs a retouch to restore the protection. If it gets dull, but remains intact, a rub down with a single drop of BLO will restore the beauty.

I guess I dreamed the "steel into the story. Sorry for my confusion.
