Gil, The pattern on the Mojave will start out as well defined diamonds and fade to bands near the last third or so of the body. The Mojave also has a diagonal stripe behind the eye that does not contact the mouth and three enlarged scales on top of the head. Hope this helps-JB

The Mojaves I have encountered seemed to have a greenish tone to them which the Western Diamondbacks don't seem to have. Plus the Western has the ring tail to it. But I could be wrong since I seldom study them for more than the time it takes to get the shotgun around.

In the area around the town of Mojave and north to China Lake and over east to Lucerne, I've seen very green Mojave rattlers. In the area I quail hunt south of the Carrizo Plains, in the hills, they are nearly a charcoal color.

Gil, Yes some of them are Crotalus Atrox or Western Diamondbacks. It is not uncommon to find different species in the same den.
As Chuck has noted there are different color phases. The snakes from the north are usually darker in color and will not have the green tint they are known for.
GregSY, I know bird dogs and snakes dont mix but I am sorry you feel the way you do. Without these snakes the rodent population would grow unchecked and eat everything in sight. Best-JB

The snakes must be left to them selves. We need to be aware of their turf and act appropriately.

I just have no use for poisonous snakes. In today's politically correct world I know my views on snakes, illegals, and gay marriage are not popular but I have them nonetheless. I'll gladly kill any rattler I can. Sorry.
I'm also sick to death of hearing about humans respecting the turf of snakes. Where a human stands in no longer snake turf. It's human turf.
Dogs? About 25 years ago a guy who ran a backhoe for my father had a 2 year old girl who came on a rattlesnake in her own backyard. It bit her eye, and she was dead in a couple hours. If you'd like, I can send you her parents' address so you can visit them and explain to their face that their dumbass daughter got what she deserved.
