I was at the local range last weekend and bumped into Joe Shiosaki, a local gunsmith of Air Cushion Stock fame. He mentioned that Simmons had started offerring the solid rib for 42s and 12s that he believed was laser matted. He said the matting was excellent.

Possibly they'll do matting on a sxs rib?

They do, in fact, offer installation of matted solid ribs but not the matting of round barrels like another Winchester restorer did while he was in business.

Seems to me that if the matting is laser cut, matting a round barrel should be simple.

I don't know if we have established that Simmons is laser cutting the matting. They don't state that in their advertising.

Bill,
I agree. The website says nothing about laser matting. Joe was the one that said they were using laser and that he had looked at an example and that it was very good.

I have some stainless spurs that a friend made for our horse club that have some waterjet 'engraving'. It's pretty crude IMO. Laser would have better resolution/finer/more consistant cutting.

"We have been trying to buy one of the matting machine's, there are 3 that we have found and are working on buying one of them.
We still have a supply of winchester solid ribs for m-12's and m-42's but would like to make our own.
That said, we are also looking into comming into the 20 century are using a lazer engraver to do the matting.
It looks great in the samples we have done and i am hopefull that we will have simmons/winchester solid ribs at some point soon.
I am also working on the return of the simmons classic rib patteren, the herringbone style we did for many years.
These will be a by order job, no mass produced product, needless to say but it is hurting my brain with all the math i have been doing so i am going to have a Guiness extra stout at this time.

"Wow, how good are you at file cutting. it has been my experience with rib matting that if there are any miss-matched patterns in the overall finish of the rib it will show up like nothing seen before.
We have tried different ways to matte a rib and found some that work great and some that just look plane ugly.
Laser cutting works good, sand blasting works ok but milling a pattern works the best for us.
Rolling the pattern works but the size and cost of a press like the one i designed was way to much.
