Purdey Serial# 4236 was one of a pair of Purdey's sold on August 2, 1847 for 105 sterling and was a 14 bore. August 1883 the gun was converted by Purdeys to top lever, back action and chambered for Kynoch 16 Perfect Brass Case with rebounding locks. So says
L. Patrick Unsworth "The Early Purdeys" Christies Books 1996.

Bingo! That is certainly it. After I read your post I measured the wall thickness at the end of chambers (towards the muzzle) and they are 0.075". Joe Wood reached the same conclusion last week when we were talking about the gun before it arrived today.

I am going to send Purdey an email and see what they can tell me about the gun. It would sure tickle me if they reply they did the conversion.

Thanks again guys.

Best,

Mike

Wow H.W.! I made my previous post before I saw yours. Gee thanks! I never even heard of that book! What are the odds? How many guns does "The Early Purdeys" give data on.

Thanks again to OWD, Raimey, and H.W. Usually the new purchases get worser as I vet them, not better!

Best,

Mike

Mike:

Congrats on taking the risk on a nice find though. Maybe I shouldn't have used the terms boring or wear because the current measurements are less than what you would think the original to be unless you consider around 1868 a 12 1/2 bore to 13 1/2 bore could be stamped 13 depending on the discretion of the plug gauge pusher. So there had to be some sort of modification. I have a similar Thomas Bland and Sons w/ a 14 bore stamp, a later number 16 stamp but it accepts 12 bore. Mystery for now.

Kind Regards,

Raimey

Raimey I found your posts nothing but helpful and thanks again. I admire your ability to read proof marks - like reading Ancient Egyptian Hyroglyphs. The barrels have very little pitting so it makes sense to me that they have been honed some. Lord knows they were exposed to some pitting conditions. There is a stamp of .700" on the flats so I assumed that at one of the proofings that was the bore diameter. I really don't know where it quits being a 14 bore and starts being a 13 bore. I have seen the range for "modern" proof diameters but not for these "integer" bores.

And that was a bit of luck and I am grateful.

Best,

Mike

The rest of the information on your gun is "(Kynoch Perfect cartidges were made from very thin brass which permitted the gun to be chamberless without cones, the internal dimensions of the cartridge case allowed an increased load of the next larger calibre, e.g.14 bore in a 16 bore. The cartridge was popular with waterfowlers.)" so says L. Patrick Unsworth "The Early Purdeys" Christies Books 1996. Isn't it so nice that facts are so much better than BS!

Thanks! I am going to look for some Knyoch brass or at least dimensions for them.

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike, she appears to be seaworthy. Might need a little rerigging but nothing to keep her in dry dock. I can't wait to see those barrels with a proper finish. Betcha they're beautiful laminated steel. Only 161 years old....heck, she has a long way to go. You gotta take it to Whittington for the Vintager shoot in June.

August 1847...Wasn't Capt. Walker chasing Mexicans around in Texas? Purdey No.4236 looks like it survived the Alamo. Not tobe rude, but, that little 'Gem' should be thoroughly examined. Every measurable surface should be checked, How deep is the pitting surrounding the fireing-pin holes? Has you local Gunsmith"Viewed" this gun? What is the date of Proof?(Its stamped on the r/h bbl.flat.have the BBls been worked on since the date of proof? The Gap at the 'Nose-end of the bbls' is not "Original"..I sincerely hope you have many hundreds of"Happy Rounds'go flawlessly "In from the breech, and out from the Front".(161 Yrs old and still going")'Lot to be said for those old London bastards with their Gas-lights and' dripping-butties in their lunch buckets. I'm glad Unsworths Purdey book is getting some Credit, he "Busted his Limey Butt doing that Book.cc/DT.

Looks like Stephen Cobb erased the gun description....I wouldn't get too infatuated with the Purdey name and think long and hard before the three day inspection was up.
