Good Sir -
I received the following response from a reputable gunsmith:

JB,
Incidentally , at the mid point of the barrels, they have a wall thickness of .015 or more. Plenty of thickness. We see some Purdy's and other at .010 thickness.

When inspecting the wall thickness of a gun that has been recently honed and not re proofed, would you consider the comment above accurate?
thanks,
best regards,
JBP

JB,
That's only about 5 RCH units. But you knew that.

I saw a gun pass proof at 16 thou, but never less. General rule of thumb is 25 thou but depends where it is. If honed and not reproofed, it is out of proof. Simple as that.

My rule of thumb is 25/1000s at a minimum- I was stunned by the response!

JB, I think you should go back to the guy that sent you that measurement and confirm he hasn't committed a typo - possibly typed .015 when he meant .025? I can't imagine he thinks .015 is a safe condition.

Gents, Over the years, I have had Bbls pass proof in London, Damascus and Steel. Then they have been in pristine condition after having been examined, ness.work done by the finest Craftsmen in the 'Trade". No dents, bulges, pitts, either inside or on the outside, ribs back to being 'Water-Tight'. But I have also had a few that just did'nt make it....I willnot say at what Wall Thickness, some passed and some went on to the Sleeving Shop" But as a Lad on Kilburn Rd, Kensal Rise, we "Rolled Fags in thicker Paper than some of them Wall-thickness's"...Paddington Alley Slang"Fag, Something Carried on yer lower lip, unlit, whilst Draw-Knifeing off a gun-stock....CC.

Passing proof and slammin' 'em with the Range Rover's door is two different things.

Thanks David,

as a matter of advice, would you purchase a gun with only .015 wall thickness at the midpoint of the barrels ( roughly 15" from the breech)? This is a gun, mind you, that does not have the benefit of passing proof- submitted for sale in the good ole US .

I think this gun would be quite difficult to sell unless it was sent for proofing in the UK.... I've never seen a Krupp barreled European gun anywhere near that thin that had a waiting list of buyers. What would be your professional opinion of the suitability of the gun for purchase based on the barrel measurement alone, David?

thanks!
best regards,
JBP
