Two of my barrels don't have any letters on them, Don. And if the letters go clear to Z, would there have been 26 people who assembled barrels over the years? If they skipped two or three letters for some reason, (Maybe because a C looked like a G or something like that) or some years they didn't make any barrels, that would put 1942 on a P. The same with one of mine-#19754 has a S. If they skipped two letters it comes out to 1947. That is when it was made. I do have one that should be pretty new (I don't have the paperwork) #22980 that has an A. Could they have made barrels ahead and put them in storage like they did the frames? Another gun I have #93 has the number 123 (no letter)on it so could gun #93 have the 123rd set of barrels made by someone? We'll figure it out. I sent an e-mail to Ed Ulrich. We'll see if I hear from him.

William, do you know when any of the guns you mentioned were made for sure? (Do you have the paperwork for them?) It would be nice to figure this out if there is a code for the stampings.

Looking more carefully at my Win21 16Ga, the same number stamped between the barrels(602), is also present in the back of both ejectors. Can you guys check your own guns?

This is my first post on this site. I found this very interesting.
I have a 16 ga. standard grade model 21. I have no letter. One site I have checked makes me think the receiver was forged in 1935, and another site, that it was produced in 1937.
Regardless, it has 297 stamped between the barrels as well as on the back of the ejectors and the letter A in the 7 o'clock position on the right barrel. So it's possible the numbers are used to match the ejectors to the barrel assembly. The letter? Mine is a fairly early gun, so it could be a year code.
I enjoy reading and learning from this and other sites. Hope I can contribute a little.

My 1937 Mdl 21 SKEET 20 Ga has the number 487 stamped between the barrels and the letter "U" at 7:00 on the right barrel.

So, so far we have about 10 different letters and nothing is really random. Some have no letters. So it is hard to say what they mean.

They could be the first letter of the inspectors name. I doubt the year code theory.

My 12ga has "439" between the barrels, and a "U" on the left barrel face under the extractor.
One 16ga has "941" between barrels, an "S" on right barrel face.
Other 16ga has "631" between barrels, an "N" on right barrel face. According to Cody letters, the first gun started inspection in June 1939, finished in Jan 1940, and was made for a named individual. The second started and finished in July 1940, was made for A&F.
