Gentlemen, Just for conversation, would anyone offer an opinion are why so many older German guns, offered for sale, have both barrels choked full or full and fuller? Is this some precision thing or were they shooting at something that required it? Thanks, Kurt

Kurt, Maybe it is because of the type of game shooting that is popular over there, maybe a lot of walked up where the quarry is up and away smartly, therefore requiring a little choke. Most Continental guns I have handled have indeed had a lot of choke. Maybe, just maybe they shoot a lot of Trap targets? Then I suppose they would call it Von Trapp? Ah! Gunshot is The Sound of Music.

Sniping hare and fox at long range. Also, when you carry shotgun slinged continental way, even nearby game tend to become a distante afair by the time the gun goes off. I once tried to carry my double unslingded, muzzle up, but was promptly reminded by the nex hunter in the line that I must not brake with the tradition, or else... - Jani

Finally a good explanation for ole Thuringian over-choking.

Thank-you for the interest and replies! I know if I carried my gun on a sling I could only hunt tortoise!

Going back to the mid sixties when I was stationed in Germany, I did get a chance to hunt there. Back then in order for anyone to hunt on property, it was invitation only, all game went to land owner or you bought it. In order for the landowneer to hunt, he had to have a dog that would track hares, roe buck, boar (if any on property) point pheasant, hungarian partridge, and if water on the property, had to retrieve in water or cross stream to retrieve ducks or game. Most guns were 16 ga. had slings, and a lot were also drillings. If anything was crippled it was dispatched mercifull. The full choke was I quess a popular choke. I don't know if that is still the norm, I don't know what the rules of the hunt are now.
