I have a rectangular leg of Mutton case set up to carry two sets of barrels (28") and some cleaning materials. It opens at either end, and is dark brown. I believe that it is a factory supplied case for a WInchester 21. Very good condition.
I have seldom seen these, and wonder is it has any significant collector value.
Thanks for you thoughts.

C Man, I bought one in Germany when I was in the service there in 1966. Shipped a Winchester 101 20 ga., first year made, home in it. Mine opens at both ends, the one end being smaller for the barrels and forend and the other for the stock. Mine is tan. Think I paid $35.00 for it in the Rod and Gun Club on post. The fellow that ran it was a retired Sargent Major and he got very good deals. I got the Winchester for $166.85, had to wait for 4 other guys to put the order in. One of the best deals I could have had was a Browning Supperposed in 12 ga with 20, 28, and .410 barrels in a case for $500.00, but that was like $5,00.00 to me. I believe that your case does have value compared to some of the junk that is out there and the money they want for it.

The only case shown in the 1935 Model 21 catalogue is a high grade trunk case with brass corners and lock, but the text says they (Winchester) "...will furnish on request the very best imported hand-made gun cases in popular styles for double barrel guns." Guess they were too cheap to provide a quality U.S. made H.H. Heiser case!!
Schwing seems to avoid the subject of cases in his book.
I have one of these double ended cases by Red Head and it is stamped 30 but it is over 33 inches long and it appears to best fit a 30-inch barrel Browning A5 or Remington Model 11 or Sportsman, however there was a DEO-Grade 16-gauge Remington Model 1894 in it when I got it.

I have a A&F from who knows when that is rectangular and opens on both ends as well.I picked it up a auction that had mostly horse related stuff and its one of my favorites. Very well made, one side allows for the stock and barrel (with a pocket for the cleaning rod) and the other is a smaller area for the cleaning tools, oil bottle.Only drawback is it has someone elses intials embossed on it.

Could be a Heiser or a Brauer Bros., both about as good a quality case as you can find. They are made of heavy leather, similar to saddle skirting thickness, and generally have heavy-duty hardware and well-finished interiors. I have repaired a number of them over the years. Anything marked A&F, VL& D, VL& A, EK Tryon, or similar US vendors are worth a little more. KBM

Dave K, That A&F marked case is embossed exactly like my Red Head case, but my Red Head has brass luggage type locks and the ends are hinged from the side. Here is a link to cases on the Model 21 site -- http://bluepike.tripod.com/Model21/Cases/cases.htm Dave

The case I have is very much like the one on the Model 21 sight - but the LOM pictured is a single barreled gun case. Mine is double.
I have the original LOM case for my Model 21 made in 1947. The case in question has same leather and coloring, etc. The description of the Winchester case pictured on the model 21 site states that it is available in a two barrel configuration, but that configuration is not shown in the ad.
This is a really nice case. I bought it expecting to buy a M 21 two barrel 16 gauge set. The deal never happened, so I have a 'spare' case for a 28" barreled M 21.
Thanks for all your comments.

I just happened to be looking through a September 1934 J.L Galef catalogue for something else and they picture the Winchester cases same as shown on the Model 21 site. The Style 15-W had a list price of $9.10 but Galef was selling them for $4.50. The Style 35-W Straight Line had a list price of $12.12 and Galef was selling them for $5. The Style 45-W Straight Line for two sets of barrels had a list price of $16.38 and Galef was selling them for $5.75.

At those prices, I'd buy several.

I have a rectangular one stamped VL&A, Chicago. Only holds one set of barrels, and only opens from one end. Mine's got somebody else's initials, too!
