I went to ship a couple of boxes of ammo recently at UPS (which I've done many times over the years), but the clerk said NO!!,,because it might explode on the airplane. When I pointed out that the ammunition must go 'ground'; and be labled as such (small arms cartridges), she then decided it was a hazard to the UPS truck and driver because it would explode in the truck (watching way too many action movies I guess). A word with the supv. got it all back on track, but it really does make a difference who's behind the counter when you walk up sometimes...company policy aside.

I had a gun shipped to me 3 day DHL about 2 years ago. They held it in their storage facility for over a week because they won't come to my town (17000 people) until they "have enough deliveries to make the trip worthwhile". They also left a 25 lb box of fresh Alaska seafood at my office in the middle of the summer (115 degrees out). It was addressed to my home, but the driver didn't want to take the extra time to drive out there, so he gave it to my secretary while I was busy with a client. I wouldn't use them to ship a rock. Bought a Baker Elite SBT that was shipped 18days ago from Penn. via USPS Priority Mail. Was advised yesterday from the seller (honest seller) that it was in Holland, the Netherlands!! Go figure. He sent me pictures of its arrival there that had my dealers name on it.

Based on the various horror stories we have all seen here from time to time, it's pretty obvious that ALL common carriers have shipping problems from time to time, and that EACH carrier's local office pretty much determines whether they will or will not accept firearms for shipment from either individuals and/or FFL licensees. In my particular area, FedEx is run by a nerd that thinks all guns are instruments of terror and simply will not accept them. And I do hold a class 03 FFL, but it makes no difference to him. Again, in my area, UPS is absolutely great to deal with, and I have never had a problem with either shipping or receiving from them. To be sure, I have had shipments from a couple of auction houses that came in via FedEx and were fine, but I can't get the local office to accept them for out-going shipments. I don't know that I have even used USPS either way, but based on other's stories, they aren't perfect either. I have concluded it's best to be well insured in any case, and in any case, it's a bit of a roll of the dice. One of my sons operates a small gunsmith shop and does keep several dozen firearms in inventory for sale, and his experience echos mine with common carriers, but he's in the same service area I am, just 20 miles away.

I was shipped a Krieghoff in an Americase (fortunately)via UPS that must have been dropped from a height to damage the hinges and push out, not in, the front lid. My experience with UPS is that the drivers are usually very nice but they are pushed so hard regarding productivity that things can happen. Our post office is efficient but they are government employees and they seem to do a pretty good job but they are not pushed quite as hard as UPS. So far I have better luck with the USPS Priority.

Just pulled up UPS regs. They will accept guns from them if you have an account but will not accept them at their UPS Store. They also said they would accept them if you called UPS and had them schedule a pick up for non-account holders. FWIW

DHL story:

Bought a camera lens on ebay.
Seller shipped it DHL.
Lens was stolen from box enroute, I receive an empty box.
DHL refuses to honor insurance claim.
