I have a Kodiak Mark IV 45/70 that shoots 2 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. The stock is 15 inches to the front trigger and is not very handy for my 5'9" frame. I think I read somewhere that if you even change the butt pad on a double rifle that it will mess with the regulation. I want to cut about an inch off the stock but not sacrifice regulation. Anyone with experience?

Harry, I'm no expert. I would think it might change the point of impact but I do not thing it will change the regulation.

Harry, With a double shotgun which has variance between the comb and heel drop changing the lop changes the relationship between the front sight and rear sight ( your eye ). Hence with the same sighting you change the location of your pattern. Double rifles have moveable alignment sights so adjustment can be readily achieved. Changing the lop of your rifle will not change the regulation of the rifle.

Harry:

Yes, changing stock dimensions on a double rifle can change regulation. Does this rifle have a pad on it now? If so, how thick? If it does, remove it and check regulation with that. I don't think removing an inch would be a problem, but each gun is a law unto itself. I added a half inch to one of mine with no problems, but have never shortened one.

I hear that Kodiaks are not good candidates for re-regulation because the ribs aren't soft soldered, but don't know if that's true. I suggest that you call J. J. Perodeau (580-237-7388) and run your question by him. J. J. used to build double rifles for Marcel Thys in Belgium and is a wizard at double rifle regulation issues.

A couple of years ago I visited the Accurate Reloading BBS quite a bit. I have the Kodiak Mk IV in .45-70 also and was thinking of rechambering to .450 NE #2. There were several folks on that BBS that had done that. Some did not have to re-regulate but others did so I know that it can be done. My rifle will group like yours with .45-70 and I have not re-chambered. I still want a .450 NE #2 though.

Best regards,
David

I don't have the resources to reregulate, but I will take the pad off and see if she still shoots. I'll telephone JJ as well. I am thrilled with how this little rifle shoots. I would like for it to be as handy as my Parkers and think it could be if it fit me.
Thanks for all your kind advice.
Good Shooting,
Harry
