I saw this on gunbroker the other week and wondered if it was an early Paul Jaeger rifle. I am sure that there are others more knowledgeable and hope they
will comment.

early Jaeger??

The stock sure looks Sedgley like, which the early Jaegers did since Jaeger had originally worked for Sedgley.

I don't think it has any significant heritage. It is most likely a gunsmith built rifle. The smith had some skills and did a reasonable job on wood. Metalwork is lacking in most ways.

I can't prove a negative, but I don't see any thing that makes me believe this rifle is Paul Jaegers's work. Granted, it has a Paul Jaeger scope mount, but they were a pretty popular mount retailed separately by Paul Jaeger for Installation by others. Plus, the installation of the mount doesn't Show the workmanship expected and I never had the opinion that Pauel Jaeger was bashful about distinctly marking their work.

In pulling out my Jaeger 1903, i see a very similar front sight, barrel band, stock and buttplate, the barrel channel has the last three digits of the serial number given by Jaeger which is marked on the
barrel and receiver. What intrigued me about the Mauser on gunbroker, was the circle J proof mark on the bottom of the barrel. Sedgley used a circle S. I looked and my Jaeger does not have a proof mark.
So I wonder if there are examples of Jaeger's work with that circle J proof mark.

This rifle is Jaeger marked on the top of the bbl. It has some of the traits of the rifle orig posted (other than being built on an 03 of course).

I have what I consider an early Jaeger sporter that has just Jaeger marked on the top of the barrel and it has the J in a circle on the bottom rear of the barrel. Of course, mine is an '03 Springfield and I believe the simple Jaeger marking is before he added the Jenkintown mark and maybe before he moved there. I had posted this to the wrong thread.
