Does anyone recognize this mount? I do not have it in hand so I can't answer anything about it. It is a dovetail and the space between notches looks to be around 3". Please ignore the holes as they were added after the fact.

Thanks!

Hoot, it looks like a blank rail mounted to the rifle with the notches put in, by hand or machine, to prevent slippage of the rings. It is possible that one was mis located and only one was used. Also, it seems claw mounts were mounted first, and the dovetail rail was mounter later.

Thank you Mike. To my eyes, the rail and 'claws' are one piece. I didn't post an image as I was focused on the notches for the rings. It's an odd set-up with the rail/claws being very long--the front is a ways out onto the barrel; maybe 7 or 8 inches long overall. The dovetails only seem to extend in the area of the ring notches, directly above the action (which appears to be a Husqvarna 16xx type). The rifle is very attractive to me but I would only become serious if I could locate appropriate rings.

Thanks for the pic. Cousin Billybob from the porch behind the gas station (with six fingers and six toes) at his very worst.

Hoot,
At least it looks made as one piece. I have a similar one in my "junkbox" made of hand filed "claws" screwed to a weaver rail. In my opinion, your rifle had a long scope mounted on it originally in claw mounts and the front base was mounted out on the barrel. It looks like common rings were screwed to your home-made base and the whole thing was made to work as claw mounts. Now it looks cleverer than at first.

Thanks for that Mike. That makes some sense. It's an auction and I haven't yet decided to bid. We'll see if 'the fever' takes 'hold of me or not.
