A friend (and FFL) happened to have a Army & Navy marked .410 2 1/2" chambered hammered SxS. Does anyone happen to know who might have the gun for Army & Navy.

Was it W&C Scott and Sons or might it have been a different maker?

I only took a quick look at the gun because I didn't want to like it so much that I would buy it, but the barrels didn't appear to be Damascus. It was nitro proofed in Birmingham for 2 1/2" shells. It didn't appear to have been abused and may have been in original condition, showing the expected wear and tear of a working gun. There were probably a couple of small cracks, not anywhere important and the barrels were bright.

I have become addicted to English hammered shotguns to the detriment of my wallet.

P. Webley, which later became Webley & Scott, built many of them.

Many of Army and Navy guns were built by W.C. Scott and I believe that their records held by the University of Glasgow show the maker/suppier of the guns they sold.

I have no first hand knowledge, but suspect that some of their cheaper guns such as .410’s would have been sourced from companies such as Midland Gun Co.

A couple of years ago I contacted the University of Glasgow to inquire about an Army and Navy boxlock which turned out to have been manufactured and sold in 1898. Their response to my email, after about 2 months, gave the dates of manufacture and sale and the name of the purchaser. They didn't give the maker, just stating that "The records state that this is an Anson and Deeley type Hammerless Shotgun." They attached photographs of the record book entry. They did not require payment for their research but did suggest a donation of 40 pounds, which I sent.
The email address to which I sent my inquiry is library-asc@glasgow.ac.uk
This link is to a page on their website containing some advice for what details to include with a firearm inquiry: https://www.gla.ac.uk/media/Media_803949_smxx.pdf
