My first classic double was a Sauer 16ga. Like the one above, from the "between the wars" era. The above gun is much fancier than mine was. But Sauers and German guns in general tend to be pretty tough while not being overly heavy if you want to use them for hunting upland game. I owned that gun for over20 years. It visited a gunsmith only once. The link between the top lever and the Greener crossbolt broke. Once that was repaired, it never failed me again. Maybe one cold day this winter I'll go through my hunting notes and determine just how many pheasants I bagged with that gun. While I'd moved up to fancier (and more expensive guns), I'm pretty sure I've never owned a better one in terms of reliability. The gunsmith who repaired the top lever/crossbolt issue told me that when he took it apart, it was as if those who made it had prepared it for disassembly and inspection. Very well finished on the inside for a relatively basic gun.
