Unless your friend knows the gun had problems when his Dad stored it, I think the best move at this point is to simply give it a good cleaning like any other pump gun, and then shoot it. Then if it has any issues, come back here and describe the problem, and you will get better advice how to proceed.
At very least, check the bore of any gun that has been stored before shooting. I have an old Savage 20 ga. single shot that I leave in my garage. One day I took it out and dropped a shell in it to shoot a groundhog raiding my garden. Just as I was about to pull the trigger, I thought maybe I'd better check the bore. The barrel was totally plugged with a mud dauber wasp nest.
I see no reason to risk sending it out to a gunsmith who specializes in Model 12's, and probably wasting money that could be spent on shells, when in all likelihood there is nothing wrong with it. I've bought a number of old guns that looked like they hadn't been shot in quite a while, and never saw the need to send them to a gunsmith for a check-up.
