When my mother’s niece heard of our elopement, she asked my Mother why we hadn’t first gotten engaged? With no effort to hide her disgust, she answered, “Because they didn't want to get engaged. They wanted to get married.”
“He who finds a true and faithful wife finds a good thing.”
That decision was 55 years ago today and there’s nothing more I can say to my mother about it. But this country boy can say to that little bright eyed city girl . . .
Thanks, FCF. I was convinced she was the one, but it took me most of four years to convince her I was. I had lots of competition. This was her college sophomore class picture. Sorry for the quality of it, but it's a picture of an old picture. It's my home page pic on my cell phone. I never get tired of seeing it.
It never fails to astound me that such a collection of oafs were able to attract and retain the class of women that have remained by our sides for the lifetimes we’ve enjoyed.
Simply put, we really are blessed! I've learned that what I need, I already have. What I want, I don't need! We were blessed with our 50th at Christmas, we were married for Christmas! Karl
She is a timid little thing, but, puts on a brave face for us, from time to time:
She won’t shoot, but will pull for us at the club:
I tell her she is the best thing that ever happened to me. It was hard, I’m sure, to uproot from South America, leaving home and family, to be with me.
T his year it is 55 years together but in the beginning due to me opening my mouth just to change feet it could never have happened. It was eyes across the room at a Village dance you could say plucking up courage I made a date with her in two days time so far so good!!! Next day talking to my friend telling him about the much looked forward date, he said Ernie what Planet are you on you have to go bell ringing tomorrow night and you can not miss that. He was the bell captain and his word was final. Next day I waited for her leaving work and explained my predicament, her reply "that is ok I will come with you". As good as her word she turned up and sat for two hours in a thirteenth centaury windy and cold church bell tower for nearly two hours watching five other people ringing bells, watching a car rust would probably have been more entertaining. Though a visit to the village pub afterwards was a very good move
Campanology and a cold bell tower in this place makes a life time partnership OH! Plus two sons plus the grandchildren.
The only lessons in my life I truly did learn from where the ones I paid for!
My mother never said anything, no one did, the only person that did was her brother, and I thought he was joking. Oh well, I got two wonderful children out of it.
Reading the stories and seeing the pictures makes me envious. I'm glad everyone appreciates what they have, you've been blessed, best wishes to all.
