I got to handle a friend's eighteen ninety eight vintage Holland and Holland twenty gauge today. It is a sidelock gun, and a joy to hold.

But one curious thing was a lever that lay between the top lever and the 2-position safety. It can only extend straight back when the safety is in safe position. The safety cannot be switched to fire without first sweeping it to the side. Is this extra lever simply an additional safety system or does it have an additional function? When would it most likely be used?

Brent,

It sounds like a bolted safety usually found on double rifles and some single shot rifles. Does it look like this?

I think this is probably right. I vaguely remember something like that from last year when he first told me about his gun.. I will ask him tomorrow at the matches.

You were exactly right. It has a second set of 3
.303 barrels.

No, but I may get a second look between matches in a couple of days. We will get a day ''off'' then.

Often known a a “Stalking safe”.

Designed to keep the chap crawling in front of the chap dragging the rifle through the heather behind him a bit less nervous.

It will interesting to know if these are H&H barrels or add-ons from another gunmaker.
