I believe that if a gun was destined for shipment to the US it would not require either proof marks or Vorratszeichen, by the law. This doesn't mean the buyer couldn't require them.

Too, LIndner's could have accompanied Sauer's wares that were either sent or inspected in the shop. So Lindner's could have been a part of a whole that was submitted for Vorratszeichen. I just do not recall any of Lindner's wares that wasn't submitted for proof when proof was law. Daly didn't spent the money for the voluntary semi-smokeless proof until it was required post 1912.

Just a couple more data points to add to the discussion:

Daly #473 (like #458 in this discussion) also has the Vorratszeichen proof exemption mark.

Daly #481 no proof marks.

So it doesn't appear there is a clean serial number break on the "V" marks. As you mention, I think the the presence of the mark would depend a lot on where the gun was in the build cycle during this period.

Ken, are you aware of any earlier than #458 that have the Vorrat mark?
