Upper Canada was made a separate colony in 1791 when it was separated from (Lower) Canada; basically the modern provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Working on what Bluedcanoe said, Upper Canada was the area between the upstream portions of the St Lawrence / Lake Ontario / Lake Erie and the French River in the north. Once you get north and west of Sudbury it was just territory owned by the Hudson Bay Company.

It used to own most of modern Canada. Now HBC just owns department stores like Saks.

Looks like a great time, with some real beauties out in the sun! My dumb luck worked out that I was in Toronto a few days before for work, had to fly home, then had to drive back down with wife and bird dogs in tow to attend a wedding. At least we got some fishing done on the big lake, and caught some salmon. Next year I'll make it down!

Oh and Upper is in reference to upstream, as mentioned! Ontario is too damn big, its about a 16 hr drive from where I am, without even leaving the province. At least I'm that much closer to the prairies, so its hard to complain...
