There were a couple over the years I passed on, should have jumped on them then, but times were different.

They go all over the map for prices, last one on GB went for 400.00
Google search will show a lot of auction prices, up and down all over.

For what it is worth, mine does not seem to be built on a 28ga frame, more like a twenty ga with a thick barrel...Geo

Geo, from a pm sent to the OP.
"I have .410, 20 and 16. Noteworthy is that the .410 doesn't have a scaled action. It appears to be on the 20 ga. frame and to center the firing pin with the .410 primer, the breech walls are very thick. Perhaps the 28 ga. is also made the same but with thinner walls in the chamber than the .410. The barrel tapers quickly. My 220A 20 ga. weighs 5.0 lbs. and the .410 is 13 oz. heavier. The 28 ga. is scarce as you probably have discovered. The 20 ga. would work fine for a youth provided he or she didn't shoot standard 20 ga. loads. There are numerous low recoil 3/4 oz. reloads that would be easy on the shoulder. Here's a photo comparing chamber thicknesses of a Yildiz TK36 .410 on the left with the Savage .410 220B Good luck in your search. Gil"

Doesn't seem like the usual hand wringers right here would have a problem opening that .410 chamber on the right from 2 1/2” to 3”

My first shotgun was a Savage 220A in 20 gauge. I bought it with my paper route earnings, and still have it. It was a great little gun that I shot a lot, and it never gave a lick of problems. With it's hammerless design, it had a much nicer appearance than most other domestic single shots. The cyanide case hardening colors held up remarkably well too.

I agree with Gil that finding one in 28 ga. at a decent price might be very difficult, and I sure wouldn't pass up a good deal on one in 20 ga. if it was intended for a kid. I was not a beefy kid by any stretch, so that little 5 lb. gun had some noticeable recoil, especially with heavier loads. A round of 25 or 50 shots at clay targets would bruise my teenage shoulder. And we all thought more was better when it came to shot charge and velocity when choosing hunting loads. My Dad assured me I would never feel the "kick" when shooting at game though, and he was right.

My 20 gauge 220A was choked exceptionally tight, and would do a lot of damage to game shot inside of 25-30 yards if centered well. I was still in high school when I made my longest ever kill on a big ringneck pheasant. I took a Hail Mary shot with a big lead at a fast flying bird that was at least 30 yards further than what I'd consider an ethical shot today. I was at the left end of a line of five hunters when the bird crossed in front of us from right to left, and was boosted by a stiff November tailwind. The other guys all emptied their pumps and semi-autos, and missed clean. My buddies were as amazed as I was when I shot, and the bird folded and fell into the cut cornfield. I had to wring his neck to finish him, but one broken leg and one broken wing kept him from going anywhere. It was one of those shots you just never forget.

I don’t have a line on a 28 220 sorry. I do have a little info. All 220s are built on one frame. Barrels may or may not fit other frames but many do. Of course barrels must have matching forearms to gauge. Also 219 rifles are built on this frame as well and there were some combos sold. Barrels only differ slightly by the cocking lugs early-late. I am fortunate to have 2 28s, probably the best deals Ive ever found too. Also have a 410. They are choked tight as said. Neat little hammerless.

Per young users, every 220 ive handled was hard to open. Im sure a GS could smooth it up but seems the norm. Also the ejectors will put an eye out! Likely because 1 size fits all but my 28 will toss an empty 15ft and live rd half that! Be aware for youngsters. Fwiw

The 220 / 219 have a very stout coil spring behind the ejector.
Drive the cross pin out of the bbl lug that holds the Ejector in place.
The ejector will pop free and the coil spring behind it.
Replace that spring with one of similar diameter but lighter compression weight and you won't have the hulls blasting off for the unkn.

The 219 version in .22Hornet throws those little weight nothing brass cases into orbit if you're not watching.

Not a 28, but, hammerless. Would this work?

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/966015473

I have the 12 gauge version. Not a kid gun, unless he is a masochist.

The 28 gauge version of the Companion is a bit off the charts:

I’ve been looking around and was seriously thinking the 20, but I have so many 28ga shells my kids grandkids will be shooting 28! I did find a Beretta companion in 24 ga. but I think that would be more for me than anything. I would love to find them this Savage, or a 28bore British single, in case they get bored shooting I’ll have something fun to plink around with.

I purchased a pretty nice 220. 20:gauge a few months ago. It was too small for me but I couldn't pass it up. Hard to beat a hammerless 20 for a kids gun.
Gifted it to a good friends grandkids.
