Was this barrel threaded for a suppressor at some point you think? Remington Model 12, .22. Nothing else on this gun out of ordinary. Just this.

Is that a thread protector, can't tell on my screen? If it comes off, you could ballpark measure the threads. Or, that ID might be about a half inch for 1/2-28? What a shame, it really doesn't make much sense, unless it's maybe a bubba repair of some sort of damage? I tend to spot those little rifles from a ways off, an just can't pass looking them over at the shows.

It could be a thread protector, but when I make them, I knurl them so they can be turned off by hand. The front sight seems to have been set back to make room.

Cut a piece of old innertube to wrap around that area, and let you get a good purchase on it without marring the surface. Should unscrew if it's a muzzle protector for threads. Appears it might be from the image.

I would simply cut it off and recrown the barrel. Hardly noticeable and a more acceptable modification. It may be a thread protector, but my first impression was that someone intended to install front sight band.
