Greetings! I have been searching for a good starting load for my First Combination Rifle, Jan 1931 manufacture. Currently unknown maker, but appears a Suhl area type. Still trying to figure out the picture posting stuff, sorry.
8 x57 JR, My supply of powder right now is low, I want to use IMR 3031 with a 196 Gr SP.

Welcome to the Forum Steve.

I used to have a Manton of Calcutta (but German made) 8x57JR double BLNE but never got round to re-loading as I found sufficient RWS factory ammunition. Never should have sold it.

Sellier and Bellot still list the cartridge, but don’t provide loading information.

Make sure you use .318” diameter bullets.

I found a Lovex 2011 Reloading Guide and reproduce a couple of their pages which cover the various 8x57 cartridges.

I acknowledge their copyright. PLEASE NOTE THIS INFORMATION IS PROVIDED WITH FULL DISCLAIMER AS TO LIABILITY FOR ITS USE. YOU USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Please note that the CIP pressures for the Rimmed (IR and IRS) cartridges are significantly lower than for the Rimless (IS) cartridge.

It would be unwise to use in the Rimmed cartridges loads developed for the rimless cartridge in bolt action rifles.

Thanks. I am unfamiliar with those powders. I only have IMR 3031 right now. It’s not easy to get powder anymore on LI. I went with 35 grains 3031, with. 196gr SP. Hopefully I don’t blow up. I think that’s a safe starting point. I only have 3 rds right now, and that was made from parts lying around from 3 different vendors.

Awesome thx, 4064 was my first choice and went to get the powder out of my magazine…..and it was empty. So I went to 3031. So I’ll last this .318 SP out with 35 gr 3031. See what happens. It’s a really nice Combination, we’re still trying to determine the maker. We pinged guys over in Germany, it appears the logo isn’t in any of the books, the powers that be have.
Someone educate me on how to post pictures.

Army Aviation,
If you can find old German loads using their old R5 powder and similar bullet weight to the one you want to use, H4895 and VN140 seem to be close to the burning rate of R5. By reducing the charge weight and working back up carefully by chronographing the loads and stopping at or near the factory velocity, you should have satisfactory results. Bullets in .318" diameter are not overly abundant. You should be able to use any diameter bullet, over that size, that will freely slip into the neck of a case fired in your rifle and not sized. I have never seen your rifle or loading equipment/components, so you will have to follow your own judgement in loading your ammo.
