Not mine but thought it looked like top quality gun, if barrel description was positive I would have bought but sounds pretty negative.

To me, it looks like a Belgian Gesteck, parts-kit, that was finished in Germany. That odd Anson & Deeley Body Action reminds me of a few early Charles Dalys / H.A. Lindners as well as the H. Pieper platforms that Canvas-back collects. Typically a 12 bore will actually be a 13 bore as the Germans finished more 16s and didn't stroke the 12 bore tubes an additional amount out to a true 12 bore. So, some mechanic spent a little more time on it. Also, look at the preliminary German proofs on the tubes as they are mismatched in space or position. I don't think a ADHD German tube mechanic could tolerate such to leave his shop??

The H. Pieper Platform - I couldn't find Canvas-backs stash on Doublegunshop.....

Note the Cat-Eyes atop the frame and there were only a handful of select few that added that adornment. Actually Sauer had a couple....

From the same thread and note the addressing of the adornment of what we could call the Lindner / Trieble >>Bump<< on the forend with the Viennese Style / Rigby / Harvey fastner.

the cat-eyes are present on most of jager's guns, and the double outboard lumps and pins, behind the removable sideplates pretty well identify the gun as the jager verschulss (?) design. franz jager licensed (?) plenty of copies of his design, in both germany and belgium,... under a variety of names....record in belgium, for one....and he made (or caused to be manufactored) under the name herold in suhl.

i have #9944 herold 12ga, suhl proofed, and built in/about 1920....and i know that jtplumb has a least one of these guns as well. very well built and handsome guns.

best regards,
tom

I really enjoy buying the nice quality guns that need superficial refinish, but with the Damascus and said pits it was just out of my wheelhouse. If this one would have said bright and shiny bores I would be in at 7-800.00 since after the refinish it would be a great looking gun. Someone said “Without good barrels you don’t have a gun” and I agree. I don’t even like pits in fluid steel barrels. Greybeard you are correct and I do enjoy my 2 Record Verschulss guns first one was a project like this 2nd one didn’t need much.

The "cat's eyes" are the result of chisel work of the particular person that worked the action up. I wouldn't be surprised if someone smarter than I could identify the craftsman by his cat's eyes, but I can't.
