Thank you. Looks similar to many stockers of the day, lots of use of chisels. Expediency of the process put money in his pocket. Too bad someone less skilled added to an otherwise wonderful stock for the sake of a few ounces.

You even got the correct Lyman 48 with the flat top that fits into his lowered rear bridge. Does it have the PG cap with a little trapdoor? How is the barrel marked? Doesn't look like it ever had a side mount, no wood missing on left side.
What's the story of the de-wat?

48 slide has all the numbers removed not sure if that's his work or not, Has the grip cap. No real story on the Dewat, My buddy buy these kits from companies that sell the parts after destroying them for police and court he could tell based on stock work it was a pretty fine rifle. Don't know any more history on how something like this could have ended up nearly destroyed.

I can't make out the number on the barrel but it sure looks like mine which was made for A & F to sell. You can probably get a letter from G & H on it.

The Griffin and Howe list is probably numbered by the Springfield serial number, which seems to be missing. I would sacrifice a thirties vintage 03 action to complete that rifle. I guess it was an iron sight rifle. Wow. I assume it is not for sale.
