Rebluing a very nice 1932 Heym double. Have the barrels almost prepped and went to remove the stop screw for the extractor. It's been in there for 90 years and seen some inclement weather based on the condition of rest of the gun. Of course the slot stripped out. Now trying to set it up in the drill press and the center drill is too short to reach the screw (because the bottom lug on the barrels is in the way of the drill press chuck). I may have to use a center punch and regular drill and forget the center drill. Any ideas? Thanks.

Center drills are available in a multitude of lengths, order up a long or extra long one and proceed as normal.

For small screws I gave up trying to use a center punch and standard drill because one or other would wander, I replaced the drill for a carbide end mill that is far easier to center on the damaged screw.

Thanks so much for the replies. I think I got lucky; I didn't have access to a longer center drill and didn't want to wait days or longer to get one. I was able to get an abrasive sphere into the slot after some work with a small file. That helped me figure out where the center of the hole/screw needed to be. And then I SLOWLY drilled it out using progressively larger drills. So I have it set up for a #4-40 (#48 drill). I think the original one may have been a bit larger (obviously metric) and I may end up using a #5. Thanks again for the help. Gil
