Tom, regarding the top rib availability, my 1925 16 ga. FWE Field Grade has what I would think is the raised solid rib. It was completed on my birthday (month and day, not year. crazy) in '25, according to the information I was provided by the former owner, a LCSCA member.

I'm in the field today but will post a clear picture of the barrels and top rib this evening here. Maybe you could help me resolve what seems to me to be conflicting information.

Stan
According to period catalogs the Single Sighting Plane rib (noted in Hunter Arms option code references as the SSP or SP option) was not available until about 1938; so your gun predates this option. That said, the barrels of your gun could have been replaced with a set having that option; although such is unlikely as Smith guns I've examined with the SSP rib option are taller at the standing breech in order to accommodate the additional rib height.

There is a significant difference in the rib height between the standard and SSP rib Stan

This is the best pic I have right now. I don't have any pics of the muzzles and can't take any at the moment because it is in Darlington having a new toplever spring installed. Maybe you can tell which rib it is by this photo.

Sorry I don't have any closeups of the rib at the muzzle, but compared to all my other vintage American doubles the Smith has a high rib.

Yes, the leaf spring that returns the top lever to the "at rest" position. A weakened top lever spring is often the cause of the toplever moving slightly to the right and allowing the barrels to partially begin to open, upon firing the first barrel, thus rendering the second barrel useless, as it won't allow the trigger for the second to "break" when pulled. Part no. 5 in the schematic pictured in this link .........

Broken top lever springs are not an unusual occurrence on L. C. Smiths. I had one replaced on an O Grade 16 ga. years ago.
