Congratulations! to "Old Colonel" for the correct answer. The varied thickness of the top edge is to accommodate a variety of action shapes. Just thought it would be a cool addition to the gunroom.
I got the idea from a Holt's video showing an antique one made by Purdey's over a hundred years ago. It is made from California walnut.

Beautiful piece of wood and workmanship. Congratulations! But wouldn’t hanging it over your finger give you the same answer?
