For refinishing to provide period correct look, I have become very fond of Timberluxe. Their stain is also very easy to use and can be applied after any coating.

I have used Pilkington Finish as well as TruOil in one form or another for about 8-10 complete stock refinishes, and Timberluxe to me is certainly the easiest to use and produces uniformly great results.

BTW, I have no vested interest in Timberluxe products.

For touch up work on older finishes, I have not found anything that is better than CCL Gunstock Conditioning Oil. It has worked great for me on several pre war and early 50s-60s finishes.
