My W&C Scott&Son 20 ga have these marks on both barrels, but some letters are missing. I think they inform about the barrel steel. Can somebody help me with the meaning?

Of course we see >>....STEEL....<<. Maybe >>....DEX STEEL...<< or >>....DEK STEEL....<<. The coupled with the other visible, non-worn from barrel work, letters >> .....DEK STEEL....ALG<<??

Thanks for your help, ellenbr!

DEX... DEK... Strange and inappropriate steel for barrels, aren't they? I haven't seen in other shotgun before.

I don’t have my photos in this computer, but I have seen a similar barrel steel marking on Hollis, Bentley, and Playfair guns. Could this gun be rebarreled ? A fair chance, I think.

A bit later, I seem to remember the Hollis Bentley and Playfair marking to be something like Vendex Steel. I’m sure I have pictures of the mark on another computer.

Good news, Daryl! Hope you find the pictures and tell us the steel name.

Barrels are original and the shotgun is on very very good condition after more than 120 years.

On ther right barrel: S&C. Webley&Son 78 Shaftesbury Avenue London S. W.

On the left barrel: Made expressly for Luis Vives & Cía Barcelona

I don't know what is the meaning of 20 (right barrel) and 21 (left barrel) proof marks.

Thanks again, ellenbr and Daryl..

Those numbers are the old London bore diameter marks, a predecessor to the >>vulgar fractions<<.

Thanks, Raimey!

So 20 means .615 inches and. 21 is equal to .605.

The left barrel have a CHOKE mark (a medium choke, I think) and the right have no choke.

Yes, from Burrard I see the same values in inches. Too, it may be that 20 bores values didn't have >>vulgar fractions<< like their larger cousins 16 bore & larger?
