A few years ago I created a .44mag double rifle in the vision a customer had for hunting black bears and hogs behind dogs. In doing so, you typically find yourself walking long distances, and shots are VERY short. Sometimes so short the bears can leave a mark!
This rifle took the .44mag concept and made it better for his needs. This one is in .480 Ruger, which is launching a 325gr HP/XTP at over 1450fps out of the 16 1/4” barrels. The rifle weighs 5lbs 12oz as pictured, and balances 1/4” behind the hinge. The selective ejectors make quick work of emptying the chambers. It is setup with a peep sight, but has provisions for a red dot. At 40yds it’ll put 4rnds at 3/4” if you do your part.

A long dead friend made a .444 marlin double rifle based on a 20 gauge Spanish double. His fifty yard target was almost as nice as yours. He used it to take one black bear and then suffered health issues. Often wondered where that double ended up. Your version looks very handy and your sight choice seems better than his setup. Should be a lot of fun for the new shooter.

That’s very cool…and I love the practical sight options.

Nice job, Aaron. The only thing I would want different on it would be a pistol grip. I have better control under recoil with one. I used a Ruger #3 (straight grip) in .45-70, with a 300 gr. FNHP, at 1500, in it. Killed a lot of deer but it was a single shot, and I didn't care much about a quick second shot. I bought a new #1 in the same caliber, which of course had a pistol grip. I liked it much better. Recoil should be roughly the same, I'd guess, with my load and yours. About that time hogs began to move in so I used it for them as well, with a Leopold M8-3X. Always wanted to try a set of NECG peep and big white front bead. Although I much prefer a square notch and post for fine work I believe I'd like the big open peep and big bead for close up stuff like hogs, in the daylight. Nightime hogs is a whole 'nuther ball game, for us.

May God bless America and those who defend her.
