Anyone have a suggestion of who to send this to to get a hidden rod installed? It's stable here, but I'd like to get it fixed -- my first sxs and it fits me perfectly.

If you cannot find someone locally it may well be something you can fix yourself .

I assume that the cause of the problem is a vertical crack in the wooden bridge between the 2 sides of the head of the stock.

Dismantle, degrease and glue it using epoxy resin clamping it until set hard.

Find a suitable nut and bolt.

Then , making sure that you are not going to interfere with any of the working parts, drill a horizontal hole through the middle of the glued section.

To avoid splinters as the drill breaks out of the opposite stock cheek start with a very fine pilot hole, and then counter sink slightly.

Drill through a hole with a sliding fit for the threaded part of the bolt, and counter sink on each side for the nut and the head of the bolt.

Test and adjust so the nut and bolt clamp the repair firmly and are both below the surface of the stock and trim the bolt to length. Measure twice, cut once.

Coat the bolt with expoxy resin and do up tightly.

Fill the end holes with wooden plugs or resin filler.

When reassembling look to see if there is evidence of undue pressure by the top tang on the stock inletting. It may be worth relieving the wood slightly at these point.

If you decide to use Accraglass or similar to bed the head of the stock to the rear of the action use PLENTY OF RELEASE AGENT on the action body as otherwise you will not get it apart again.

That one looks more like a staple job than a cross bolt job.
Most stock repair guys can epoxy in a bridging bar (staple) to bring the two sides back together permanently.

Lay off the heavy loads.

I agree. That would certainly be my initial route.

Who said he was using heavy loads in it? That can result from various other things besides heavy loads............. a fall, someone sitting down on it in the back seat, etc.
