A Cat posted on Shotgunworld with this & I was just curious where Société Manufacturière d'armes de Saint-Étienne fell in the scheme of things with MAS, etc. Also, is any of the following correct: >>The Manufacture d’Armes de Chasse et de Tir de St Etienne was own by Martinier-Collin. it was bought in November 1885 by Blanchon and Mimard to become Manufacture d’Armes de St Etienne, then in 1911 Manufacture Francaise d’Armes & Cycles de St Etienne (but the ctges show this hstp as early as 1903), then Manufrance later.<< >>The Societe Manufacturiere d’Armes de St Etienne existed from before 1895 to after 1911<< so that might bound the date of manufacture. I can’t make out that mark, either. The proof with powder T gives you a pretty firm date of no earlier than 1900. The French took to steel tubes and hammerless designs like a baby duck takes to water.
Best, Ted

Good afternoon Raimey and Ted. The mark on the barrel must be a barrel makers mark much like the whale, rabbit (Ronchard Czeron), dolphin (Cannon Pierre), etc. I tried to clean it up but still can't make out what it is. What are the chamber lengths? That'll go a long way to dating the gun. From this line: https://doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=484411&page=51. Pre 1885. Saint Etienne under lever hammer gun Martinier Collin; 19.6 (8 guage - ad says 10 gauge but I think 10 gauge is 19.2); 80mm chambers; (Martinier and Collin founded the company which was sold in 1885; Their assistants then bought the company which ultimately became Manufrance.); http://www.naturabuy.fr/rare-fusil-juxtapose-chiens-calibre-10-saint-etienne-item-2376357.html2. 1885-1889 Manufance under lever hammer gun; 75mm chambers; 17.4 (14 gauge). Pierre Blachon n'aura pas le temps de connaitre l'immense succés de son "Robust" puisqu'il meurt en 1914.Pierre Blanchon gun maker in St Etienne a little before 1885 met Etienne Mimard, son of a gunsmith/gun dealer who had learned the gunmaking trade in St Etienne after an apprenticeship in Liege. They both were employees at Ste Martinier-Collin, gun makers in St Etienne. In 1885 this firm was put up for sale and the two men went together to buy it, It became La Manufacture Francaise d'Armes et Cycles de St Etienne (Manufrance), Etienne Mimard becoming the Director General, President of the corporate board and Pierre Blanchon Vice President. It was he who came up with the technical conception of the first models produced by the manufacturer with notably the invention of the famous Robust, which was first launched in 1913 and which became the most sold shotgun in the world with nearly 1 million examples. Pierre Blanchon did not have time to know the huge success of his "Robust" because he died in 1914. This is a good photo history of the company: http://patrimoineetmuseesruraux.e-monsite.com/album/manufrance-1855-1985/

Translation of Fab's comment: The manufacture française d'armes (MF) founded in 1885 by Blanchon and Mimard growing out of the manufacturer Martinier-Collin is not the same as la société manufacturière d'armes. See the photo of the catalogue from 1902. I don't know the date it was created, or the closing date of the manufacturer. Per the photo the barrels are signed "Marsot" This barrel maker closed at the beginning of the 1920's(Note: re date of creation, there is an 1892 catalog on-line for sale, and the gun pictured above has chambering in MM....pre-1889.) A book on its history up to 1910 is available: https://www.abebooks.fr/rechercher-livre/auteur/societe-manufacturiere-d%27armes/ Catalogs for several years are for sale: Catalog reprints are available: https://www.cornellpubs.com/old-guns/item_desc.php?item_id=3328The company made bicycles and motorcycles: They made cars for a few years in the early 1900's. This one sold for $126,000
