It's going to be interesting to hear what a real gunmaker replies, but I like for mine to. I even like to see the imprint of the screw heads. It gives more stability when the lock screw pulls the lock into the inlet, IMO.
The only comments I've ever gotten from pros, on this inlet, were positive. One was from my mentor, now deceased, and the other from Steven Dodd Hughes. It's a m/l lock, but the same difference I'd think. You can see where the bridle and it's screws make firm contact in the inlet. I've seen originals with the locks off and on one or two you could see the imprint of the screw slots in the wood.
