LetFly,
Your problem is going to be "begging off", when every body wants you to do this for their guns.

Use the correct glue, base preparation, application and final finish sealing and it will not delaminate with normal use. Sealing all edges is critical. Also not my sporting clays gun. It will come out to bag a few woodcock a couple of time each season.

I should have added this photo to the previous post. As it is not possible to use the vacuum method I find this works quite well as a substitute. The bands are silicone and will take heat well over glue setting temp of 300 degrees.

Frame carefully let into new wood on stock wrist. Next steps include stain to match original stock then cut new checkering.

Been a while since my last post back in March 2021. Fishing season, muskie chasing to be clear, takes priority. Now I am back at this Sauer hammer gun project.

I am working on putting the checkering back on the fore end and then the stock. As you may recall a previous owner sanded it all off. This is my first attempt at the art of checkering a complete pattern. I have recut worn checkering on other guns. This is a completely different game. My highest respect for the professionals in this field. Advice is always welcome.

For this project I assembled a full compliment of quality tools (DemBart, Gun line, and Ullman, plus many I made myself.) I have Kennedy's good book plus a couple of other how to books. (What I need is a good book on what to do when the straight line is not so straight and the pattern goes askew). After much reading, YouTube watching and practicing on a fore end blank, I started in. I am using a checkering pattern from another 1903 Loesche/Sauer hammer gun. I am using a 3:1 layout at 22 lpi.

These photos show my progress. Panel on the right in the photos exhibits less mistakes and was completed after the panel on the left. I have the upper half of the pattern to finish. Hopefully I will have all the checkering completed before quail season April 2022. That is the plan.

Letfly,
Understand, I am neither a stockmaker or "checkerer", but I think the tool you are looking for to straighten lines is a long single line cutter called a "Joiner" or "Jointer".

For those following along on this project I have progress to report. I have successfully added the veneering to bring the wood up to the proper height to remove any proud metal. I have refinished all the wood including the veneer. I checkered both the forend (22 lpi) and stock wrist (18 lpi) to incorporate the veneer. The veneer is hard sealed after finishing with epoxy to prevent delamination from handling. I have been working on this project on and off for almost two years. These photos show my progress to date. At this point I will start on rehabilitation of the screw heads. Look at the final photo for an example of the abuse to be corrected. I have received a lot a great support and help from those interested on this forum. Thanks. If you have experience with redoing screw heads I will appreciate any advice.
