I seem to remember that Sir Samuel Baker, having run out of bullets for his muzzleloader, got out of a predicament with an angry quadruped in Ceylon with a handful of small change.

Just like in Young Guns 2. Best $1.80 Billy the Kid ever spent.

Silver does not retain energy well down range. Gold would work better. Flat disc are very poor at keeping a pattern. Up close you might get by but past 15 yards you are going to be in real trouble. But any hope is better than none when you either shoot what you have or run like hell.

watt bout the cork over shot wad? if that works, then one could easily change loads in the field...load for birds in the morning and then switch to buck or ball in the evening...or vicee versee...

How about three, four, or five pennies (cheaper than dimes) stacked with over shot wads in between until the shell is full. Pennies might have to go in an eight gauge but it would be an interesting experiment. Will pennies fit in a ten gauge shell?

A load of dimes is a crappy shotgun load. A dime has no positive ballistic qualities. The Mythbusters show proved the load worthless against a pig carcass.

Not at all practical in that ten dimes make a dollar and in the 1880s that was a day's pay. Talk about the price of Bismuth!

History Channel did a special on Billy the Kid. They fired a buckshot load at a hanging pig carcass. Then a load of dimes. The buckshot tore it up the dimes mostly bounced off. Maybe the original less lethal round?

The ballistic coefficient of flat coins are, well, not great. Not to mention the sectional density!
I also wonder what the heck coins he used in what gauge barrel. Today's Roosevelt dime won't fit past a full choke 12-bore. I'd say he ended up with a choke bulge if nothing worse!

those would be civil war era dimes...
most likely gun that early, is not choked...
an thinkin, perhaps the dimes all stayed together at close range. sorta like ah silver slug...
some testin is in order, but pre 1870 vintage cartridge guns in shooting condish are scearce...
