Hi Forum members.
I am thinking of adding a leather pad on the stock of my 20Ga Gastinne Renette shotgun. The stock currently has a wood extension of about 1/2 inch and an old silvers pad. I want to remove that old pad and add a new 1 inch pad in order for the stock to fit me. What do you think? If i did the pic posting below correctly, the link will show you a pic of the present stock. Thank you in advance. BillK

No question. A leather covered pad will do wonders.

I assume you want to remove the 1/2 inch wood extension as well and go to a 1-inch leather covered pad to maintain LOP? That would certainly improve the looks in my opinion.

If you are not going to remove the 1/2” extension send it to Mark Lawson to have him blend the wood to match the stock. Then send it out for a 1” leather pad. Do not remove that extension and just have a 1 1/2” leather pad added to get the total right. 1 1/2” leather pads look hideous in the real world. If you are just looking for a simple extension removal and 1” pad let the person who is going to do the pad remove the extension.

rather than add rubber, add wood...

rubber weighs much more than wood, and as such screws up the balance of a fine gun...

keep it simple and keep it safe...

Thank you gentlemen.I need to add 1 inch extension without removing the 1/2 wood extension already in place. If I were to remove that 1/2 wood extension, I would need 1.5 inch new extension (leather or pad), which I agree, does not look good at all. I have also thought of the extra weight the extension would add and I do want to gun to balance at the high pin or slightly ahead (it has 26" ballers) of the pin.I love this little gun, but I have not shoot it much because of this dilemma.

It would look much nicer if that extension was blended to match the stock or if Mark was to “ink” the butt to both match and enhance it. If you need to rebalance the stock a bit of weight can be removed by drilling a hole in the stock or added by putting extra weight into the hole.

Best find in a old gun I have had was a roll of dimes used to weigh a old stock. Found it when I pulled the butt plate off. All silver dimes, mostly 1940-1950s with about a dozen earlier mercury dimes. Neat surprise. Been neater if they were gold coins I guess.

If you need the 1 1/2" length, I'd go with covering it all in leather. Unless you do like KY Jon says.

What are you willing to spend? I think the going rate on a leather covered recoil pad is something like $3-400, having Mark do grain painting will add to that cost, I imagine not insignificantly.
