Pmari, welcome to the pinfire rabbit-hole. I hope yours will turn out to be shootable, and that you get much enjoyment of the experience. And thanks for taking the time to read the pinfire game gun thread.

Anyone who owns a pin-fire and does not read Steve's definitive line, does not want to be educated. smile

I would like to offer, based on compilation of one manufacturers guns, that pin-fires continued to be the dominant center-break guns in the UK up to at least 1872. By 1874 they are gone.

No offense taken.....I'm still trying to soak up as much information I can. I spoke to the owner of the gun shop that Drew suggested. His gun smith has worked for him for over 30yrs and was trained in liege!! He didn't think it was neccessary to send him my gun. He felt that any smith could measuure the barrel thickness. Frankly he said, if your only going to put low load black powder through it, barrel thickness will most likely not be an issue. If the wall thickness is between 25 and 36 thousands. But also said that every time the gun is fired to visually look for rippling and bulgeing. He said damascus got a bad name from the turn of the century cheap guns.
First fire will most likely be in a vise with a long string attached to the trigger! grin

Wall thickness measurements are critical, and MWT (minimum wall thickness) is only part of the issue. Wall thickness at the end of the chamber out to 12", where the pressures are greatest, is IMHO of greater importance.

Surviving a single home "proof" load is no guarantee that the barrels will survive the next one

This has been my assumption.

Mine too & empirically it appears the French mechanics were the designers & developers & then the Brits & others like the Germans, commandeered the platform / technology & improved on it, whether it be by purchase or emulation. One thing the French did was to use the cheap Belgian labour(as did the Germans) to manufacture their wares, sometimes pricepoint wares.

Cheers,
