I've been researching the web and came across a current Merkel manual...

It states that if you close the action while depressing the triggers, it will de-cock.

Does this apply to pre'2000 Merkels also?

That will work in general. Gun open wide, safety off, pull triggers and hold them back as you close the gun. The potential problem is the safety off portion. If the gun has an auto safety, the mechanism that puts it on safe may prevent you from having the safety off with the gun open.

I just decocked my Oscar Merkel 301e 16 and the ejector springs are compressed when this is done! I have never been able to determine if the this is the correct way to store the gun?

If you are concer4ned about the ejector springs, you might try removing the forearm and "trip" the ejectors manually, while cushioning them with a piece of wood or plastic.
