FallCreekFan: Appreciate the better information on this Ithaca (wish I'd bought Walt's book when it was reasonable). My brother-in-law is purely motivated by emotional attachment here as the gun was used by his late police officer father. I'm guessing... but I doubt that he'd even use it again. It will likely become a wall-hanger upon it's completion. Selfishly, I'm hoping his interest in doubleguns (in general) will be sparked a bit by the process he's undertaking, but...I guess we'll see.

Ted: I'm a Nitro fan too. Shot a 16 for years as a boy.

A lot of project guns remain project guns through several owners. Sometimes the path doesnt lead anywhere.
Your BIL has his heart in the right place, but, that doesnt mean his brain would agree. A Nitro would cover his shooting needs until such time the project could.
Or, until the towel got thrown in. Or, until he realized he didnt need a shotgun.

Good luck.

Best,
Ted

Not calling your bil a fool, but this is not only a bad errand, but a very difficult one. If he was a die-hard Ithaca enthusiast it could be an understandable pursuit, but just because he has some iron, no. He should take an aspirin and let this pass.

I've run across a lot of Crass guns in poor shape over the years. All were better than the sound of the one described here, and almost all were very inexpensive, but for a select few.

I found my Crass for under 1k. It had been restocked and completely refinished. A friend wanted it pretty bad and I was no longer shooting it. So, it has a new home.

Finding an original set of barrels will be the real challenge. I'd keep the parts for 'inventory' and find a clean used NID Ithaca-still a good double yet today. RWTF

Chuck H: That's easily the nicest Crass I've ever seen. Haven't heard anything more from my BIL so....I'd guess his dalliance with it is now over.

Pretty decent review of an American gun by a Brit. Rather fun.

Reminded me of the hunting I did with the Crass maybe 15-18 years ago. 1oz 7.5 shot, 1150ish fps, ~ 6000 psi or less.
