Im biding my time, Gene. I'm fine but extremely weak. I've been told twice that for each day you are on a ventilator it takes 7 days of recovery. I was on it for 9-10 days. That's kinda discouraging.
look at the long term, ten years from now, you won't care how long it took to recover, you will just be glad that you did and had ten more good years of life.

Stan, Im going through similar circumstances. Ive spent almost seven months in bed, forced to keep a foot up because of numerous, seemingly never-ending surgeries. Ive been given the all clear now, and its all I can do to walk 100 yards right now. Im working on it daily as I know you are. If you need a comrade in recovery, Im here. God wouldnt have kept us around if he didnt have more for us to do.
Stan, if you had been with my wife and I about an hour ago you probably would have been drooling a little and feeling much better by now! Drove by our farm where they had harvested corn a day ago and the place was absolutely crawling with doves. Hundreds of them. Youd certainly be welcome to give them a go!
It's been several days since I promised a narrative about my accident, and this morning I feel considerably stronger than any day since I've been home, so here we go.
Saturday before Labor Day I had a full day planned. A friend had asked me to play golf with him. I haven't played since high school but replied I would on one condition .......... that he shoot sporting clays with me, which he had never done. This day he would shoot with me in the morning, then we would drive on up to Clark's Hill Lake for a huge Trump boat rally, and ride on a friend's big 34' cigarette boat. We did all that, then headed the boat back to my friend's houseboat, which has a high waterslide attached. I was feeling particularly teenagery that afternoon and went down that slide. After a bit I decided to go again, and let that old "need for speed" get the best of me. At the top I kinda jumped onto the slide to get extra momentum. This went all wrong, and I tipped way too far back when contacting the slide, and landed on my back, and hit the back of my head on the slide, rendering me immediately unconscious.
I went straight to the bottom of the lake, in about 12' feet of murky water. After a few moments a friend noticed I didn't come up and "blew the whistle". As many as 15 guys jumped in and began searching for me, to no avail. One Marine, TJ, remembered he had a mask, got it, dove and found me. With assistance he got me up and on a dock or something. He didn't know me, but without thought for himself he began administering mouth to mouth resuscitation. TJ was shot on two different occasions in the Middle East, released from service, and now works at another Augusta area hospital. He brought me back, getting my blood and vomit into his own mouth in the process. I had been on the bottom for approximately 5 minutes. (See how long you can hold your breath sometime).
When I was revived my buddy called my son at home, told him what had occurred and his wife heard . She is a L & D nurse at the biggest hospital in Augusta and told my buddy to order the ambulance driver to take me to that particular one, as there are two other hospitals in Augusta. The driver resisted a second or two, but my friend was firm. This turned out to be a huge decision by my D-I-L. TJ rode with me in the ambulance, which is unheard of. They lost me again enroute, and TJ brought me back again, with the EMTs watching.
When I arrived at the ER there was a doctor awaiting us. He has been there 11 years and specializes in ....... guess what ....... drownings and near drownings.. He just happened to be on duty . He had treated a boy who had a similar experience in the same lake a few weeks earlier and suspected the same bacteria would be in my lungs. He was right, and got me on a ventilator and IV drip with appropriate antibiotics for those bacteria immediately.
I lay on the ventilator for roughly a week, they tried to take me off it, and my heart resisted by going into an arrhythmia, "afib" I think they said (?), so they backed off for two or three more days. Somehow, before the next time they tried to remove me from the ventilator, the word got out that they were going to do it at a certain time. Prayers went nationwide in minutes, and removal was totally successful . So, breathing tubes remained, and I was brought back from under sedation. This was the worst ....... the breathing tubes. Imagine your mouth stretched fully open, a big wad of tubes down your throat, can't swallow and can't speak. That was a perfectly miserable three days. When they pulled them all out, I can't express the joy I felt. I could immediately speak and drink water.
I went to my GP Monday afternoon. He said there will be 100% recovery. I lost 20 lbs. and only weighed 148 lbs, in rehab. I can stand in the shade under a powerline. Muscle loss. He told me to eat lots of protein, keep doing what I'm doing, and it will all come back. He and another doctor there, and shooting buddy of mine, stated that 95% of people who were underwater that long would not have survived, yet here I am, and with no diminshed mental capacity except for some memory loss of that particular day .
I'm a believer and follower of Christ, I've made no secret of that here. For those of you who are also, you will undoubtedly see God's hand at work throughout this past month. I highlighted some of the things that are the most evident signs of that. I cannot express my gratitude to all of you who held me in your prayers and offered your thoughts and concerns for me.
I'm getting stronger everyday here at home, and am working on getting my lower body strength back. My blood oxygen level, with no supplemental O2, runs around 97-98%. I'm going stir crazy. Lord give me patience.

Stan, even though I had heard earlier of this it is only now that I am hearing exactly what happened. Your story is amazing and sounds like God was there every step of the way.
I reread the other thread today where you all responded to Steve Bertram's steady posting of my time in ICU, the hospital, and rehab last fall. I just realized that few of you really know the extent of my recovery. I owe it to you all to bring it up to date and bring this to closure.
My recovery was much faster than any of the medical personnel involved could believe. After arriving home I got stronger day by day until, after about a week, I pulled myself up into the cab of a John Deere and combined peanuts all afternoon. And then, every day after that until they were all done. Then, I did the same thing with the cotton picker. Over the next couple months I slowly regained the 20 pounds of muscle I had lost. I still had a little cough when I inhaled deeply. My Doc said that might never leave me, after what my lungs had been through. During a subsequent visit a couple months later he asked if I knew my blood pressure was elevated. I asked how high it was and he replied 162 over 93, and that he would not allow that to continue. He then asked if I still jumped rope as exercise. I replied that I did not as I had not started back after my accident. He gave me one month to get my bp down with exercise, or it was going to be meds for me. I began jumping rope the next day, boxer training style, with two jumps off the floor for every rope revolution. Within one month my bp was down to 132 over 82. He grinned and said he'd see me in 6 months. The cough is totally gone.
I now jump rope each day. On a normal day I'll do two sets, one early morning and another late afternoon. I'll do 150 to 200 each set, which translates to 300 to 400 jumps off the floor each set. I am asked regularly if I have any lingering after-effects from the drowning. I don't. None at all. I really believe my lung capacity is better than it was prior to my accident. At 69 I feel like a million dollars. I can do everything I could do before, maybe a little more. I still have my goal of killing a limit of doves on October 13, 2051, my 100th birthday. And, I eat in a manner that contributes to my health and longevity.
Last, but most important, thing. I want to once again thank you all who prayed for my recovery and healing. Your prayers were heard, and I believe I owe a huge part of the outcome to those prayers. I'm older, hopefully wiser, and a bit less prideful and cocky. I understand that I was given a second chance that most do not get, and I am humbly grateful for that. I constantly look for why I was brought back, and allowed to have more time in this life, when so many are not. I always give my Lord the credit for my life, and recovery, when ever I have a bully pulpit to speak. You played a very important role in that recovery. I am forever grateful to you all. I won't name any names, but you know who you are, if you spent time in prayer and concern for me. Thank you one and all.

Unbelievable what the subconscious mind can accomplish as shown with Iron Mike jumping rope. If one could get to that level of subconscious mind while shooting a shotgun, that individual would never miss a target. Easier said than done.
For me it's just a means to an end. That end is increased lung capacity and lower blood pressure. I admire those who can do all the fancy rope jumping, but personally have no interest in it. It's not particularly fun, but I consider it essential ................ for me, so I push myself everyday to do it.
I seriously doubt if anyone really cares one way or the other if you jump rope Stan. Now, that is a boring topic. What’s not boring is a study of the subconscious mind as illustrated by Iron Mike and his ability. You call it ‘fancy’ rope jumping but what you yourself are doing is jumping rope with your conscious mind, hence the poor quality and it not being particularly fun. Iron Mike is utilizing the subconscious mind to perform. Like I said, if one can harness the subconscious mind with shotgun shooting then that individual would rarely if ever miss a target….and that’s not boring, like watching you jump a rope likely is.
I guess when he bit part of Evander Holyfield's ear off it was his "subconscious" kicking in, too. Tyson's a brawler and a criminal. Not much there for me to admire.
FWIW Buzz, I only reported on my recovery because of the dozens on here who were so concerned for me. I felt like if they cared that much at the time they would be interested in the outcome. I wasn't me that brought the rope jumping to the forefront, but frAnk and lonny with their pokes and jabs. Knowing what it did/does for my blood pressure, without the use of any meds, is something I would think many of us on here in our senior years might be interested in. You're not ........cool. I never meant the report to exhibit anything but my extreme gratitude to all who were concerned for me. So, I'll bow out, now.
Oh yeah, at least one persOn here cares whether or not I jump rope. He's fascinated with it, even daydreams about whether or not I wear a jock strap.
Stan, I think you are taking all this a bit personal. I was discussing the subconscious mind vs the conscious mind only. Nothing to denigrate you, only making a point. Maybe you should go jump some rope, blow off some of that steam and get that blood pressure down. Good luck to you.
