Years go there was a fellow who advertised in DGJ, or maybe SSM, that had a unique niche offering. He claimed to fit traditional leather covered pads over existing butt end treatments for the person who wanted a leather covered pad, and resulting increased LOP, without cutting the original butt. He also claimed that it could be removed at some time in the future without any resulting damage to the gun's original butt treatment. I've not seen his ads for years, or heard anything of him.

Did any of you have that done, or know personally of anyone who did? Or, maybe Steve or Dennis, or other stockers might have knowledge of the success or failure of what he was offering. Maybe even offer potential pros or cons? I can envision that the base of the rubber pad itself would have to be sculpted to fit the shape of the butt face, which could take some time to do properly.

I have several guns on which I use KickKiller leather lace-on pads for added length, but on which would like to have something that looks much nicer, such as guns with original checkered butts, or engraved heel and toe plates with grooves between the two.

Thanks, SRH

I believe that was Peter Koguette(I am not even close on the spelling) who offered that service. He used a certain glue that he claimed would not hurt the finish and could be removed at a latter date.

I have never taken on that challenge, the normal type of leather covered pad is enough frustration for me wink

As you noted the pad would need to be fit to the curves of the existing stock which I think would be pretty darn tricky. If you give it a go, takes some pics.

It's Kogut. I had Pete make an extension for an SKB Royal I once had. I don't remember anything about it being removable, but his work was first rate.

Wasn't there an article about the glued on pads in one of the magazines? Or was it here?

I have fit an extension to a curved butt by using solid countertop material, and filled the joint voids with the epoxy filler that came with the countertops.

I got it from the scrap pile at the Corian! shop.

It's very rigid, but fits well. Easy to shape, but harder than runbber.

Could easily be leather covered or a soft pad attached.

I would think that if the effort was made to fit a leather covered pad, that either existing screw holes could be used or new ones made if they would be hidden when returned to the original configuration. I suppose it would go without saying that an extra effort should be made to keep the original screws or screws and plates with the gun for the benefit of those who might not realize what's in the old catch all boxes and drawers.

I used the existing buttplate holes.
They were drilled parallel, so the oversized coriander spacer had to be drilled before contour shaping to line up without tension. Covered the butt with Saran Wrap, and filled the joint with epoxy. Screwed it on, and then finished it after hardening.

As I recall from the drawings or images in the article, the joint between the butt stock and the glued on leather pad was very very nice, not oversized, flush, not puckered.

That doesn't sound like a reversible procedure, but pics?

I thought about using this quick mount system for a leather covered pad. This way you dont need to worry about plug holes.
